Home | Recent News | Aberdeen Village | Stamp Collecting 01 Oct 2006 Stamp collecting focus of meetingThe Manor Educational Society Meeting was held Oct. 19. Because October is National Stamp Collecting Month, we invited Dennis Ouellette to be our speaker. Dennis worked for the post office for 35 years and retired earlier this year. Dennis told the group he started collecting commemorative stamps in 1974 when stamps were only 10 cents each. He said each stamp has history that often includes sports, art, politics and geography. Postage in the United States is cheaper than anywhere in the world. Most stamps are self-adhesive and very few “gum” stamps are made. During the 1950s, stores accepted stamps as money. If a person did not have exact change, he or she could use stamps. Dennis brought along several books of stamps that he has collected for residents to browse through.
