The luncheon was an opportunity to meet the pageant winner and learn more about a topic that is close to her heart: hearing loss. Downs was born with a severe hearing impairment, but because of technologies that allowed her to use a hearing aid from an early age, she has been able to participate in all normal activities. She was very involved in school activities and graduated magna cum laude from the University of Alabama. She is preparing to enter medical school, where she plans to become a pediatrician. The residents enjoyed meeting and speaking with Diedre personally. “She was a gracious, lovely young lady,” said resident Fran Adair. “Unpretentious and tall."
