Gardens are springing up in many different places around Aberdeen Village, both inside and out! In the Highlands assisted living area, Director of Assisted Living Sandra Glaser has added a “secret garden” to the loft area above the entrance. “It’s just something the residents enjoy,” she said. The loft is decorated with artificial tulips, decorative benches and a garden table. Changing items seasonally, Glaser hopes to add some green carpeting to give a grassy effect. | | The Assisted Living garden area is one of the many quiet places to enjoy nature at the Manor. | |
In the apartement homes, resident George Rice shows his love for gardening in the area off his patio. This spring, Rice, a retired Nazarene minister, proudly displayed his garden of tulips blooming in the shape of a cross just in time for Easter. “It took a lot of work last fall,” Rice said. “But, it was worth it to see the result just in time for Good Friday and Easter.”
Other residents are taking advantage of the 10 garden plots on the north side of the apartments to plant such items as tomatoes, cucumbers and sunflowers. The garden plots were added by resident suggestion. Not all residents have ground floor apartments and didn’t want to let their green thumbs go to waste. Thus, the garden plots offer a place to sow their seeds of creativity. Did you know that some believe the term “green thumb” originated from the fact that algae growing on the outside of earthenware pots will stain a person’s thumb (and fingers) if he or she handles enough pots. Hence, a person who is always working with flowerpots has a green thumb. Summer is here and the residents and staff of the Village are happy to find it in a garden. So, look around the community inside and out if you would like to find a quiet place to enjoy a garden.
