Exercise center is a popular attraction

You can find them at 6 a.m. or 1 p.m., swimming, walking, rowing and pedaling. No matter the time of day, residents are taking advantage of the exercise center and swimming pool. Aside from scheduled daily exercise groups, which include water exercises and group exercises, residents exercise on their own at any time of day.

Resident Bob Butler likes to get up early and start his day with exercise. “I start around 6 every morning, except Tuesday,” Bob said. “I get in the pool and do about 25 minutes of aerobic activity, then I swim 15 laps. That’s my routine.” Bob is not the only early riser, there are other “regulars” using the pool or exercise equipment each morning.

Residents George and Edith Rice can be seen walking handin- hand, holding their towels on the way to the pool. They choose to take a swim about an hour before lunch almost every day. George also credits the pool and water exercises for saving his life last year.

“One day, I became exhausted after swimming just 10 laps,” George said. “My wife Edith and son Larry rushed me to an Olathe cardiac specialist. Three days later I had quadruple bypass surgery. The doctor told me this early detection and operation prevented serious damage to my heart muscles.”

After three months of rehabilitation, George returned to the pool and soon reached his former level of ability, swimming 20 laps.

“It’s the most enjoyable part of our day,” George said.

According to the American College of Sports Medicine, aerobic exercise helps maintain and improve heart and lung function and cardiac output. This can also help increase endurance. So, no matter the time, no matter the day, the exercise room and pool are always open for a resident with motivation to live a healthier life.
