Frequently Asked Questions

We asked our locations for the three most frequently asked questions from people visiting their community for the first time. We hope this will answer some of your questions as well as serve as a guide to questions you may want to ask other communities you visit.

Since each location is unique, these are general answers that cover most of our communities.

Our Presbyterian Manors professionals love to talk about what their location has to offer — and we encourage you to contact the Presbyterian Manors community in your or your parents'’ area for lunch and a personalized tour.

Do you have to be Presbyterian to move to the Manor?

Seniors of all faiths have found a place where they can be themselves and find the friendship of neighbors just steps away. Manors offer on-site worship services and Bible study presented by clergy and lay people from a variety of faiths.

Does the Presbyterian Church own Presbyterian Manors?

The Presbyterian Synod of Mid-America, which includes Kansas and Missouri, chose to place the ownership and management of the organization and the communities with Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America, located in Wichita, Kan., which is responsible for managing the operations of the 18 locations in Kansas and Missouri. The management of each community is, in turn, responsible for its own daily operations.

Presbyterian Manors maintains a covenant relationship with the Synod and Presbyterian Church (USA) as part of our faith-based beginnings and mission of service. Many local churches support their local PMMA community in a variety of ways, assisting with fundraising efforts, Bibles studies and other worship services, etc. Church members are often our most active volunteers.

Is it expensive to live at a retirement community?

Generally, as an active living neighbor, your basic living cost will be comparable to the costs associated with living in the community at large. We have a helpful worksheet that each location’s marketing director can go over with you that helps you see how the cost compares. Consider what you gain in time and freedom to pursue your interests and hobbies as an intangible value of moving to a Presbyterian Manor community.

We encourage you to contact the community in which you are interested to go over the Worth Comparing worksheet so you can get a better idea of what you’re spending now and compare to living at a retirement community.

Do you have an entrance fee?

There is no entrance fee. Three locations, Arkansas City, Fort Scott and Lawrence, have a $500 application fee which covers the cost of administrative work. Two locations, Salina and Topeka, also collect a $500 fee; however, it is refunded on your first month’s fees.

Most locations offer financing plan options including the option to pay monthly fees with no deposit. Some of these plans are designed to provide you with the means to preserve personal resources for future use through a deposit plan which typically reduces the monthly fee and the majority of the deposit is refundable to you or your estate should you leave the community or you can access the deposit to help cover costs should you need a higher level of care in the future.

Can friends/relatives stay overnight?

Although not every community has guest accommodations, if the location in which you are interested has a guest apartment, it can be reserved by residents, much as you would a hotel room, to arrange for an overnight stay for friends or family members. There is a per night cost in most cases.

Can I invite guests for lunch or dinner?

You are always welcome to invite friends and family members to join you for a meal. Most locations ask that you give 24 hours’ notice. In some cases, you may be asked to pay a nominal fee to cover the cost of your guests’ meals.

Are pets allowed?

A number of communities allow pets, and accommodations for pets vary. Check with the location in which you are interested for more information. In addition, a few locations have pets that regularly visit the location, including therapy dogs, while others have organizations or individuals who regularly visit with pets, and sometimes more exotic animals. Several locations have large aviaries for the enjoyment of all.

Is it possible for me to “try before I buy”?

Many Manor locations participate in the Staycation Program for those looking at active living options.

This program gives you the opportunity to experience Presbyterian Manor living firsthand without having to make a commitment of signing an application or moving in. Currently, seven Presbyterian Manor locations offer the program, in which you can choose to schedule a one-, two- or three-day and –night stay at the PMMA location in which you are interested.

At locations that do not offer this program, you are always invited to join us for a meal or join in life enrichment activities.

Is transportation available for residents?

Yes. Presbyterian Manors offer  scheduled transportation for appointments, shopping trips, and so forth.

Other transportation may be  available, and may require an additional fee.

In addition, most Manors schedule opportunities to "car pool" via Manor transportation to venues in and near their communities. Restaurant lunches and dinners, cultural presentations such as theatre and concerts, museum tours, special outings, etc., are popular with our residents.

What kind of activities do you have?

Presbyterian Manors offer an array of activities and programs for residents to choose from — and, often, their families and friends. It is our desire to provide options to help residents remain as intellectually, physically, socially and spiritually active as they like.

Regular activities can range from yoga classes to craft groups, painting classes to bridge tournaments, book clubs to walking groups. Presbyterian Manors also present  a number of special events throughout the year from art exhibits to barbeques, and dances to seasonal festivals.

What other amenities are available on-site?

All locations have hair  styling and barbering services on-site. Although specific amenities vary by community, they include: bookmobile services or on-site library; massage therapy, manicures and other spa services; laundry services; newspaper delivery; gift or sundry supply shops; housekeeping and covered parking.

Most communities offer wellness programs, have arrangements with nearby fitness centers or have a fitness center on-site.

Do you accept Medicare?

Our health care centers are Medicare-certified. They can also serve people with short-term needs for recuperation or rehabilitation following an injury or serious illness. Medicare does not cover the cost of care long-term, however.

My loved one is on a special diet — can the Manor accommodate that?

Each community offers a choice at meals that allows for heart-healthy, low-sugar or other options. Because we follow a resident-centered philosophy of caring, we leave menu choices up to the resident based on what he or she has discussed with the doctor.

May my parent or loved come and go as they please?

Assisted living residents are encouraged to maintain as much of their independence as possible, though we do ask that we are notified when leaving the campus. We will assist them with things they may need to have with them, such as prescription medication, while they are out if requested.

The communities will ask that health care and memory support residents (those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia) be accompanied by a friend or family member who has coordinated the outing with staff.

What about family outings for health care residents?

We know how important family connections are to residents’ well-being. Customarily, and depending on the type of program your loved one is in, all that is asked is that the family member or resident notify staff of your plans — when you will be leaving and when you expect to return. Some communities have after hours security measures, both to protect against unwanted after-hours intruders and to help ensure that everyone who should be is home, safe-and-sound each evening.

Another consideration is what special needs you may have when leaving the campus, such as portable oxygen, nebulizers and other breathing aids; or time-critical medications. In those cases, staff will likely ensure that a family member is familiar with those needs to ensure a pleasant visit or trip.
