As with many end-of-life decisions, choosing to enroll in a hospice care program is a deeply personal choice. It depends almost as much on your individual philosophy of living and spiritual beliefs as it does on your physical condition and concerns for family members. When a patient’s physician determines that there is a likely life expectancy of six months or less, it may be time to consider hospice care. Presbyterian Hospice of Mid-AmericaTM is Medicare-certified to provide care.
Medicare Hospice information
Medicare provides hospice coverage for Medicare beneficiaries. The Medicare Hospice Benefit provides for support and comfort to terminally ill patients, including services not usually paid for by Medicare. To be eligible for hospice care, a patient must have Medicare Part A coverage, as well as:
- Physician and hospice medical director certify that the person is terminally ill, defined as having a life expectancy of six months or less;
- The patient signs a statement choosing hospice care instead of routine Medicare covered benefits for the terminal illness;
- Medicare-approved hospice program to provide care.
Should the patient’s health improve, or their illness goes into remission, patients always have the right to elect to stop hospice care and return to the regular Medicare health benefits. Likewise, should the prognosis of six months or less change, or the patient chooses to seek curative treatment, the person under care may return to regular Medicare benefits.
Many private insurance companies also cover hospice services. If the person is covered by a private health plan or through an employer, check with the health insurance company to find out if hospice services are covered.
