Arkansas City, Kan. — Sept. 16, 2005 — Pamela Johnson-Betts, secretary of the Kansas Department on Aging (KDOA), recently named Presbyterian Manor as recipient of the prestigious PEAK Award for 2005. “You and your staff are to be congratulated on the achievements you have made in changing the way services are provided to senior Kansans,” Johnson-Betts stated in a letter to management. “Your efforts have distinguished Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor as a leader in the culture change movement.”
PEAK, Promoting Excellent Alternatives in Kansas, is a cooperative program of the KDOA and Kansas State University. The goal of this initiative is to change the culture of long-term care through recognition and education. Presbyterian Manor in Arkansas City is one of 10 locations selected to receive an award this year.
“This is a great recognition for the ability of our staff, residents and families to work together,” said Sarah Griggs, executive director. “Our residents have taken an active role in working with the staff to let us know how we can best serve them while meeting our mission of providing faith-based retirement living and health care services dedicated to the values of service, respect, dignity, and independence.”
On the application submitted for the PEAK Award competition, Presbyterian Manor included recent recognition for its quality improvement program. Newly implemented programs such as extended serving times for all meals in the dining room and an expanded menu from which residents may select their meal choices were also cited. In addition, this spring, a raised garden area was constructed near our patio area, giving residents — including those in wheelchairs — an opportunity to cultivate a variety of fruits and vegetables.
The ten state winners of the 2005 PEAK Award will be recognized this year at fall and winter conferences of the KDOA and the Kansas Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (KAHSA). In addition, K-State will continue developing education modules, incorporating the innovative ideas of Presbyterian Manor and other winners.
“We are very proud of the Manor in Arkansas City,” said William Ward, president and CEO of Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America. “They are a great example of the challenge of the PEAK program, which focuses on services for our oldest Kansans. By creating a variety of avenues for change, being mindful of residents’ needs and preferences—they are effectively helping to dispel negative stereotypes of senior living choices.”
Presbyterian Manor in Arkansas City is a not-for-profit active living and wellness community, currently observing its 27th year of providing senior living options in south central Kansas. The Manor offers patio and apartment homes for active seniors, with home health services available as needed. As a complete retirement community, Presbyterian Manor also offers assisted living and heath care accommodations for those requiring additional services. It is part of the Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America network of 17 communities located throughout Kansas and Missouri.
