Art is Ageless: Celebrating creativity
What age do you have to be to start creating amazing works of art? At what age do you stop producing truly inspiring pieces?
Residents and friends of Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America’s Art is Ageless program are proving that art, in any form, is an ageless ambition, whether you picked up a brush for the first time before reaching 20 or completed your first drawing after turning 80. Encouraging older adults to take up the arts and express themselves is a natural fit for Presbyterian Manors’ overarching focus on individual well-being. Studies have shown that seniors active in the arts report better health, have more positive attitudes and are more active.
Art is Ageless is a competition and exhibit exclusively for artists over age 65, with the pieces completed within the last five years. Local competitions are held at PMMA locations, each with its own set of local art experts as judges. The local judges select a Best of Show as well as winners in nine categories (drawing, fiber arts, mixed media, needlework, painting, photography, quilting, sculpture/3-D and Christmas). Photographs of the winning artwork are then evaluated by another panel of judges at the systemwide level of competition for the Art is Ageless calendar, greeting cards, and other printed pieces such as letters to donors and posters.
“Personalities” by Carol Brown from Clay Center, Kan., created at age 67, appeared in the 2006 calendar.
Aberdeen Village residents initiated an Artist of the Month program to showcase resident art. The honored artist, selected by residents, is highlighted in the community's newsletter and their works take center stage in the community's new Wall of Fame exhibit area. Above, resident Omar Schartz, an Artist of the Month, draws a Western Kansas harvesting scene in February that had become the beautiful painting, "It's Gonna Rain" by August. His "Tough pull to Silverton" was a birthday card selection during 2010.
