WICHITA, KS – Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America is pleased to announce the winners of the 27th Annual Art is AgelessTM calendar competition.
A total of 77 entries were submitted for judging for the Presbyterian Manors system of 17 communities. Since the first calendar was produced in 1980 for the 1981 calendar year, more than 675 pieces of art from nearly 400 artists have been recognized.
All local judged exhibits were open to artists 65 and older throughout the areas that Presbyterian Manors serve. All works submitted for judging must have been created in the past five years, to promote the expanded mission of Art is Ageless to develop active arts programs throughout the Manor system.
“We were pleased with community response and the inclusion of the greater community has re-energized Art is Ageless as it moves into its next quarter century,” said Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America Corporate Director of Marketing Leslie Chaffin.

The Spirit of Art is Ageless Award is a special award that began with the competition’s 25th anniversary. The Spirit of Art is Ageless honors a Presbyterian Manor resident who embodies the pursuit of the arts throughout their retirement years. It is awarded annually. Age is a factor in the selection of the award recipient as is their exploration of artistic mediums over the years.
This year’s Spirit of Art is Ageless award winners are Vera Hamm of Dodge City, KS and Mary Kessler of Newton, KS. Runner up for the award is Frances Reber of Topeka, KS.
This year’s Art is Ageless competition began in late July and throughout August with judged exhibits at all 17 locations in the Presbyterian Manor system. First place winners from these competitions were submitted for judging at the corporate level. Many artists chose to only participate in the exhibit which increased the number of works shown over the past few years significantly.
Several locations partnered with community arts organizations or galleries to mount the exhibits, which were on display for the public for a minimum of seven days. In addition to the exhibits, Manors hosted gallery talks, workshops and demonstrations to further the mission and purpose of Art is Ageless.
Judging the competition this year was Leslie Pryzbylek, curator of humanities exhibits for the Mid-America Arts Alliance in Kansas City, MO. MAAA is a regional arts organization that serves both Kansas and Missouri as part of its scope. Pryzbylek has been involved with the arts and humanities for more than 15 years. She holds a BA in art/art history from Gettysburg College and an MA in art history from the University of Delaware. Entries were judged anonymously from slides submitted from each local competition.

The 2008 Art is Ageless Calendar will showcase 12 works with an additional four runner-up pieces represented on postcards on the back cover. Pryzbylek selected nine works for Honorable Mention. In addition, works to be featured on the annual Christmas card, birthday card, and note cards also were chosen. Works were selected for an anniversary card and sympathy card this year as well.
“The calendar and cards carry a very positive message regarding one’s ability to pursue talents and interests throughout our lives, whether it is rekindling a hobby set aside while raising a family or fulfilling a lifelong desire,” Chaffin said.
2008 Art is Ageless calendars will be available in early November. Calendars are $12 each, which includes postage and can be ordered through Presbyterian Manors, 6525 E. Mainsgate, Wichita, KS 67226. The Spirit of Art is Ageless Award
Art is Ageless began in 1980 as a competition for residents and employees throughout the Presbyterian Manors system to appear in an annual calendar. Since then, the competition has grown to encompass preliminary judging and exhibits at the local level with winners in each category sent via slide photography to the corporate office for final judging. In addition, arts programs to benefit residents at all levels have provided artistic outlets and therapeutic programs in several Manor locations.
To our knowledge, this is the oldest exhibit and competition exclusively for mature artists sponsored by a not-for-profit retirement community or group of communities.
