The Rev. Thomas Wentz is remembered by his nominator as having "an excellent personality and management ability. He was able to keep you entertained, and created a very friendly atmosphere through person-to person contacts." According to those who knew of Rev. Wentz's tenure, terrific food and programs, and excellent care were hallmarks of his time leading Presbyterian Manors.
Rev. Wentz served Presbyterian Manors from 1966 to 1981 during an era of significant change. Within this period were such major events as the civil rights movement, the new Synod reorganization, the reuniting of two major branches of the Presbyterian Church separated since the Civil War, and the expansion of the Manors from 6 to 15 communities.
During Wentz's service, the heart of the mission was community building, and was grounded in the theology of the priesthood of all believers so as to engage in community life and ministry to/with staff and retirees. The central focus on people, mission and service brought recognition of the concept of wellness to the Manor programs, and led to national recognition from the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging.
Rev. Wentz currently resides in California, where he is director of the Presbyterian Conference Center at Big Bear Lake.
