Dr. George Nelson was born in the Presbyterian Manse at Rossville, Kan., in 1903. He moved to Topeka when his father, Harry L. Nelson, accepted a pastorate at Topeka's Potwin Church. His father retired there 27 years later, having served 26 years as stated clerk of the Presbytery of Topeka.
Dr. Nelson graduated from the College of Emporia before attending the Teacher's College at Emporia, the University of Chicago, the University of Cincinnati and Lane Theological Seminary at Cincinnati, where he earned two degrees.
After graduation, he served the Presbyterian churches at Horton and Herington, Kan., for seven years before moving to Newton in 1941 to serve as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church.
Dr. Nelson served as trustee of the College of Emporia, which conferred upon him a doctor of divinity degree in 1943. He also served as moderator of the Synod, chairman of the Synod's council and stated clerk of Wichita Presbytery.
Dr. Nelson was appointed acting superintendent of the Newton Presbyterian Manor in 1949, and officially became superintendent in 1952. He was also named executive secretary of the Presbyterian Foundation of the Synod of Kansas of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America.
He was, in his words, "the responsible head of the whole program" from its inception until his retirement in 1972.
